Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC LCD Monitor review
Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC LCD Monitor review
![]() I received my package from Dell today after a 3 day wait. I chose regular ground shipping and it came by way of DHL and I was very happy to see the box was in very good condition. I had researched monitors pretty well before deciding to purchase a Dell 24 inch monitor. Many people suggested that I could buy two 22 inch monitors for the cost of the 24 inch. I had seriously considered it and if you really like dual monitors it may be a good option. But wow what a difference 2 inches makes. Tech SpecsTaken from Dells website Features Picture in Picture, Picture by Picture, UltraSharp, Tilt/ Swivel/ Height Adjustable Display Type Flat Panel Display Diagonal Size 24" Weight 18.3 lbs Built-in Devices 9-in-2 Media Card Reader Connectivity Technology Cable Device Type LCD Monitor Dimensions (WxDxH) 22" x 7.7" x 15.3" - 23" Dot Pitch 0.270 mm (Pixel Pitch) Enclosure Color Black Image Brightness 400 cd/m2 Image Contrast Ratio 1000:1 Image Max H-View Angle / Image Max V-Vie ±89° / ±89° Max Resolution 1000:1 Max Sync Rate (V x H) 76 Hz x 81 kHz Port(s) Total ( Free ) / Connector Type 4 x USB 2.0 / Analog / DVI-D / S-Video / Composite / Component Voltage Required 100 V - 240 V @ 50 Hz - 60 Hz Response Time 6 ms (Grey-to-Grey) When I opened the box the monitor was nicely packed in plenty of Styrofoam to protect it with the accessories on top. ![]() It came with a DVI-D(single link) cable which suprised me due to the amount of money Dell could save by not including such a luxury. After unpacking and examining the monitor for any damage i briefly looked at the instruction sheet as it flew by me out of the way.lol Its really not needed for even the newest of users, Dell has made this as simple as it possibly could be. The stand is a really nice design and it easily just snaps into the back of the monitor with no screws needed. ![]() you just slide the 2 tabs into the 2 slots ![]() Here you see it from the other side with the tabs inserted into the slots ![]() and it just snaps in, to release it you push that black button right under it. ![]() The tilt on the Dell 2407 LCD is more than what would be needed for people from 3 feet tall to about 9 feet tall. ![]() ![]() It will swivel to both sides equally which could be very useful using a dual monitor setup. ![]() ![]() you can easily raise and lower the screen vertically and it will lock in the fully down position. You can unlock it by pressing the silver button on the back of the stand. ![]() Fully lifted it has 5.5 inches of clearance under it, for me thats perfect for my center output speaker. ![]() ![]() On the left side of the monitor it has 2 USB ports to plug in any accessories you may have, and also 9 in 2 memory card readers. ![]() The ports on the back are pretty straight forward and clearly marked for anyone who isnt sure what plugs into where. Upstream means that you cant plug a device into that, you can only plug it into your computer with the supplied USB cable to make the 4 other USB ports and the memory card ports active. ![]() On the front lower right of the monitor is the control panel. ![]() 1. This is the input source select and just scrolls thru the different ports on the back to allow quick access to the source you wish to view. 2. This is the PIP (picture in picture) or PBP (picture by picture) select button. i really like this feature because you can plug in a different source like a television or different computer and have the screen display both. Great for having a small news feed going in the corner and the screen is large enough to not feel like your losing any space from it. This is PIP shown below. In PBP you have the screens are next to each other they can be equal size depending on what resolution you have set to each. ![]() 3. OSD Menu / Select (onscreen display) The OSD menu is full of settings for the basic user and higher advanced users. One option i really liked was a quick change image mode option for desktop mode, multimedia mode or gaming mode. ![]() One other nice feature for MAC users is a quick change option. ![]() 4. Brightness and contrast / down (-) This brings up the brightness and contrast quick change menu if you push it while not in the OSD menu. It also functions as the down button for navigating while in the OSD menu. 5. Auto Adjust / UP (+) You use this button to activate the automatic setup and adjust menu. The following dialog appears on a black screen as the monitor self-adjusts to the current input: Auto Adjust In Progress Auto Adjustment allows the monitor to self-adjust to the incoming video signal. After using Auto Adjustment, you can further tune your monitor by using the Pixel Clock (Coarse) and Phase (Fine) controls under Image Settings. NOTE: Auto Adjust will not occur if you press the button while there are no active video input signals or attached cables. 6. Power button The Power button turns the monitor on and off for those who werent sure about it. lol The green LED indicates the monitor is on and fully functional. An amber LED indicates DPMS (Display Power Management Signaling) power save mode. The included CD has the manual and drivers if your computer doesnt show the full 1920x1280 display options. I would recommend learning about all the setting for the monitor within the manaul to fully optimize the abilities of it. I ran a series of tests to look for any dead pixels using online pixel test sites. i couldnt find one dead pixel. In running the Nokia focus test it really showed the quality of this monitor, at default settings its focus was perfect. ![]() The readibility test shows any areas that may not display text properly. On my 19" flatscreen CRT which i upgraded from i had a problem with readibility, certain areas of the screen would bend the letters to one direction or the other which made reading small text somewhat annoying. So i was really happy to see such crisp clean text with no distortions at all thru the entire screen. ![]() The default factory setting the monitor came with was just slightly brighter than it should be in the brightness / contrast test. I havent lowered it yet because I have been enjoying the way web pages look so bright after having a CRT that i had to strain to see with. ![]() In all of the tests i ran, color, convergence, moire, resolution, geometry, screen regulation, etc. the Dell 2407WFP-HC monitor was without a single problem. I have no way of showing you the actual brilliance and color this monitor has because you are looking thru your monitior at any image i post. I will attempt to give you an idea of just how nice the contrast is and the brilliance of the colors. All I had that was even close to compare it to is my 17 inch Dell LCD E173FPc which isnt a fair comparison but it will give you an idea of how nice it looks. My Dell E173FPc 17" monitor is actually pretty nice for the average user and i would never complain about the quality of its picture. ![]() Here you can see just how nice the viewing angle on this monitor is. ![]() The actual viewing dimensions i measured to be approximately 20 5/8"x 13". To get an idea of how big that would be on your desk you can cut a piece of cardboard to those dimensions and hold it up. Everyone who has seen this monitor has been in awe by it's size and clarity. I had one comment as a user opened up google and the brilliance of the white page blinded her "it's like it's snowing out" Here it is sitting next to the 17" monitor on my incredibly ragged table i use for a desk. ![]() To put the monitor into portrait mode you simply turn it and set you monitor setting accordingly. This function is great for reading really long scrolls lol. ![]() Something i really like about it is i can view a webpage normally and still see my icons and other background programs. ![]() Conclusion While many computer enthusiasts get the latest and greatest video cards and the fastest CPUs, the monitor is usually the last thing to be upgraded. I feel that many users are really missing out on half of the view by not getting a quality monitor. The cost of 679.00 may turn several users away from this monitor but myself I feel it was one of the best investments I've made on any computer component purchase. While there are so many things about Dell I just despise, the tech support outsourcing, the included Dell software on their computers, etc. I have to admit they have a perfect product with this monitor. Pros: Size, color brilliance, ease of use and set up, 3 year standard warranty, accessory ports. Cons: None Reviewers Rating: 10 out of 10 |

awesome review. I was especially impressed with the "portrait mode" of the monitor.

Great review, excellent to see so many good photos.
I've got one question, with the three image modes, desktop, multimedia and game mode, can you pre-program these to your own personal settings and if so I presume it will remember them. Thanks |
