FSB wall on Neo2-FR, memory limitation or ???

System setup:
MSI Neo2-FR Motherboard rev 1.0, v1.6 Bios
Cooler Master Vortex TX Cooler (27c idle, 47c loaded temps)
E6550 CPU
Xclio 450BL PSU
2x1GB OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 Ram

My best max OC so far has been 2800Mhz @ 400fsb. It's 100% stable no matter what I throw at it so no real complaints there.

My question is, no matter what I try to go higher, it will not boot AT ALL. It won't even ty to load windows. I'm wondering if it's the mobo or maybe the ram holding me back. No matter what tricks I try to isolate the issue, it will not go past 400fsb! Everything runs at stock volts and bumping voltage on any or all helps none. I've relaxed the timings on the ram, lowered the multi on the CPU, nothing.

I tried setting the bootstrap via jumper to 200mhz down from 333 and 266 and it helped none. I tried 433fsb x 6 and it refuses to post. Anything between 400 and 433 it sometimes posts but won't boot into OS. It seems something has a 400 ceiling and I can't figure out what it is. I don't have many divider options for ram on this mobo so i'm not sure where to go next. No matter what tweaks I try, it seems that it refuses to go 1 tick over 400fsb.

how hot is the chipset heatsink getting at 400 fsb? i would think it has to be the mobo since you lowered multi and relaxed ram with the same effect.

Not hot as far as I can tell but I have yet to reseat the heatpipe on the chipset. That'll happen after i get my new cooler installed next week.

From the reviews i've read about the OCZ ram though, it doesn' tclock very well either so i'm stuck at thinking it's either the mobo or the ram.

but if you can hit 400 @ 1:1 and you put in a divider and relax the timings you should at least be able to go 410-420 at least if it was the ram.

There isn't a setting lower than 1:1.

As seen in this review: Good design, good overclock, good pipe-The MSI P35 Neo2-FR overview - TweakTown Forums

well that sucks, try taking out a stick and see how high you can go with just one. at least you would know if it's the memory or not holding you back.

I just reseated the heatpipe on the chipset and put ceramique instead of their TIM, made zero difference.

It's gotta be something hitting a wall. Maybe if my bro brings his machine i'll see for sure, he has his well over 3.5Ghz so we'll start swappin parts and see where the bottleneck is for sure.

No, haven't tried one stick yet. My bro is running the Abit IP35-E with his E6550 @ 3.6GHz so his ram and CPU have much higher breathing room than mine. He's gonna try my stuff since we know his board can hit higher fsb's.

After some more playing, it MAY be the ram after all.

I set it back to 333fsb and set the ram divider so the ram would run at 833 and it refuses to post. Either my ram is crapping out at exactly 800 or something else is fishy. I need to try 1 stick and see what happens. It's just weird that 400 is perfect, 401 and BAM nothing posts. Just fishy is all.
