rhino56, that's a beautiful job you did lapping the cold plate (as opposed to... that's a beautiful lap job...sounds kinda kinky). What's your secret and how long did it take to achieve that? I get lazy after about 45-60 minutes.

thanks, i have a piece of glass that is not a dedicated one, i take it out of a picture frame that its in and put it on the counter.

i started with 400 grit emery cloth backed wet sanding paper. i dont press hard at all. copper is fairly easy to do because its soft. i spend alot more time with the higher grits. i went up to 2000 grit.
to get the shine like that i used a polishing stone thats made of leather that i use for my chisels when i use japanese water stones.

its such a soft metal that if i rub it with a cotton cloth (t-shirt) it will get really fine scratches in it

my digital caliper tells me it is, the hubble telescope lens was the largest area to be ever made completely flat within reasonable specs. they had to do it by hand.

ok I am just saying that the heat transfer ability depends on contact area (check the formulas or pm/aim me I will be glad to give a lecture on it, greenman100 knows more than me about this but still I know enough to get me by) So the fact that it is shiny does not mean it is flat (I know you know that I just do not want misinformation to spread).
