Surface area is significantly more important than material used.
As the surface area of cpu's are concerned a good thermal transfer material is needed, but as far as the rest of the system, Al will perform just about as well as Cu and considering how much cheaper it is, it would be easy to have more surface area for the same cost. Another thing to consider is the thermal capacity of a material. Cu holds a little more than twice the heat that Al does. I have been told that the formulas that are used to determine thermal transfer do not use nor take into account thermal conductivity of the materials
